Several organizations, including consumer advocates and mobile development groups, have come together to propose a new code of conduct for mobile apps. It would require developers to provide privacy information in a standardized, easy-to-read format, somewhat similar to the nutrition information labels on food.

Some praised the new code. For example, Tim Sparapani with the Application Developers Alliance called it “a victory for common sense.”

However, many said the code will do little to improve actual privacy. Some consumer groups say the code doesn’t go far enough; others say that instead of a voluntary code, the government needs to step in with legislation.
